Narcissus was a prince who was foretold that he would live a long time but only if he never saw his own image.
Becoming a beautiful boy, he rejected all the girls, because they weren't beautiful enough for him. He also rejected the nymph Echo who was consumed with love, leaving only her voice. Nemesis, the goddess of vengeance, listened to the curses of another boy he rejected and condemned him to fall in love with his own reflection.
Along a river she saw herself, she fell in love with that new image for him, without even knowing it was his own, until he drowned, in a spot where yellow narcissus flowers were born.
Echo and Narcissus is a 1903 painting by John William Waterhouse, kept in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, England, which takes up the mythological story narrated in Ovid's Metamorphoses.
